Round Table

This roundtable invited the two artists to approach the framework of Orientalism as an expanded question of image-making, examining the possibilities of its critiques and the limits of its paradigms. The discussion focused on drawing strategies, approaches, and methodologies from the artists’ own practices.

    Marwa Arsanios

    Marwa Arsanios is an artist, filmmaker and researcher whose work takes the form of installation, performance and moving image. She reconsiders the political developments of the second half of the 20th century from a contemporary perspective, focusing on gender relations, collectivism, urbanism, and industrialization. Her research spans several disciplines and is expressed in various collaborative projects.

  • Oraib Toukan

    Oraib Toukan

    Oraib Toukan is an artist and scholar. She holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University. Toukan’s artistic research practice engages with our relationship to mediated images of violence, particularly the fine line between looking and turning away. She works with photography, film, text and language, using post-production as a means of exploring the complexities of representing encounters with violence.

  • Lama El Khatib

    Lama El Khatib

    Lama El Khatib is a writer and cultural worker. Since 2018, she has worked at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin as a curatorial coordinator, researcher, and producer. Her work draws on abolitionist traditions and is invested in a poetics of “the labor of the dead.”
